Hope House Cultivates Community Garden
Penobscot Community Health Care (PCHC) is pleased to announce that Hope House guests, staff, and volunteers have sustained a community garden for the third year. The produce is used for meals at the Hope House Shelter, with extra produce distributed to Summer Street Health Center, Unlimited Solutions Clubhouse, and Bangor Area Homeless Shelter. The garden has grown in the past few years, with more seeds and seedlings planted, and is producing a fairly high-yield crop of nutritious vegetables.
Seeds and seedlings were donated by generous community members. Hope House also received cash donations to purchase equipment for the garden. Additionally, the family of Adam Williams, AmeriCorp Member who started the project in 2011, contributed their time and seeds in his memory. Monique Gautreau, PCHC Board Member and long-time benefactor of the Hope House, frequently offers her knowledge of gardening and provides starter plants for the effort. The Hope House utilizes community volunteers, shelter guests, and transitional housing tenants to plant, care for, and harvest the vegetables.
The Hope House plans to continue its Community Garden in the coming years and extends its appreciation for the collaboration and donations received from the community and from members of the Hope House Shelter and Transitions Programs.
